I completely understand if some of you get confused about my spring sowings. After all, a lot of crops return in intervals. Sometimes even weekly. I keep doing this basically all season long. What I sow in March is no exception. Why? Isn't it easier to just do a few single sowings instead?

Well no, I actually don't think so. My philosophy is to sow little and often. This gives me a steady supply of vegetables that I can harvest over a longer period. For example arugula. If I sow a lot of arugula early in the season but perhaps just in one or two batches, then I need to harvest everything at once. I'd rather sow around 3-6 ft (1-2 meter) long rows once every other week instead. Growing quite intensely all year round works so much better for my garden.

What I sow in March:

Indoors, transplant outside later:
Alliums (silverskin onion, yellow onion, shallot, red onion)
Herbs
Pointed cabbage
Early broccoli
Chitted potatoes, early and late varieties

Indoors, transplant to the polytunnel later:
Tomatoes
Basil
String beans

Hotbed in the polytunnel:
Leafy greens and radish if there's room.

Polytunnel:
Spinach
Arugula
Turnip
Spring carrots
Dill
Parsley
Lettuce
Scallions
Snow peas
Pea shoots

Polytunnel, transplant outside later:
Kohlrabi
Kale
Pointed cabbage

That's it, this is what I sow in March! I'm going to print this list and start sorting the seeds. There's just nothing better than spending a few minutes in the sun with my seeds before I sow. It just makes me feel so alive! This picture was taken in March 2015 when I sowed spinach outdoors.
